Monday Evening Meditations

Binghamton Buddhist Meditation Group: (Previously known as the Southern Tier Meditation Sangha):

All are welcome! Whether you have been practicing Buddhist Meditation for years or you are curious to see if it is for you - Please join us to practice together!

You need not to identify as a Buddhist to practice these meditations. The meditations we will be practicing will include (but not limited to):

- Breathing Mindfulness Meditation

- The Meditation on Lovingkindness (Metta Bhavana)

- Chanting

There will be opening prayers, however, you need not do them if this is not your spirituality.

The layout of each weekly meditation group:

First there will be opening prayers.

24 minutes of breathing mindfulness meditation. Instructions will be given to newcomers.

Next, it will be different each week. We may do any of the following:

1: Practice a Guided Meditation by one of the group leaders.

2: Read from a Buddhist text: one already translated by a modern teacher (for example: Pema Chodron).

3: Chant a Buddhist Mantra

4: Listen to a recorded Buddhist teaching

5: Have the honor of having a live teaching (whether in person or online) by a Buddhist lay teacher, Master or Lama.

At the end of every group there will be a dedication of merit.

Group Guidelines

Practice Compassion and Loving-Kindness

Be kind to all who enter the group. Hate speech will not be tolerated.

This is not a place to bring politics however relevant they may feel to the teachings. This is a place to rest the mind from the mundane daily happenings of the world. We are not burying our heads in the sand. We are taking a rest, becoming present and going back out into the world with kindness and compassion.

Honor the Teachings

Appreciate the Buddhist teachers' experiences of many years of meditation that brought them to the knowledge and wisdom that they are sharing.

Debates are discouraged due to not having a teacher present in most meditation group sessions. We do not want to inadvertently  change the understanding of the teachings. If we have questions or concerns we may contact a teacher by phone or email and ask them directly. We may all write down our questions and email a willing Buddhist teacher to address our questions.
